One of the main influences on Ende's writing was his father's art, which was banned by the Nazis as "degenerate". Ende witnessed the destruction of his father's studio and hundreds of paintings during a bombing raid in 1944. He later said that this event marked the end of his childhood and the beginning of his interest in fantasy as a way of coping with reality. [1]
After the war, Ende studied drama and worked as an actor, director, and film critic. He also wrote scripts for radio plays and short stories. His first novel, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver, was published in 1960 and won the German Children's Literature Prize. It was followed by Jim Button and the Wild 13 in 1962. These books were inspired by Ende's love of travel and adventure, as well as his fascination with fairy tales and mythology. [2]
Ende's most famous work, The Neverending Story, was published in 1979 and became an international bestseller. It was also adapted into a popular film in 1984, directed by Wolfgang Petersen. The novel tells the story of a boy who reads a magical book that transports him to a fantasy world called Fantastica, where he has to save the Childlike Empress from a mysterious force called the Nothing. The novel explores themes such as imagination, creativity, identity, and responsibility. [3]
Ende also wrote other novels for children and adults, such as Momo (1973), The Night of Wishes (1979), The Mirror in the Mirror (1984), and The Neverending Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). He also wrote poetry, essays, and speeches on various topics. He received many awards and honors for his literary achievements, such as the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. He died in 1995 from stomach cancer. [4] 061ffe29dd
